If you’re new to Medicare, new to selling insurance, or both, you’re probably wondering – why sell Medicare? It’s complicated and full of rules and regulations, and it’s hard to tell where it’s going to end up with President Trump. Here’s the thing, though: people won’t stop needing coverage, and there are well over 46 million senior citizens living in the U.S.
Baby boomers are hitting retirement, and the Population Reference Bureau expects the senior citizen population to double by the year 2060, putting them at 1/5 of the total U.S. population. Every day, about 10,000 people become eligible for Medicare. As an agent, it will become increasingly difficult for you to ignore those numbers and ignore the opportunity of selling Medicare.
To sell Medicare, you will need to be certified with AHIP (America’s Health Insurance Plan) every year. Thankfully, FMOs like Senior Market Advisors offer AHIP training.
You will not have to wait for AEP to sell to new clients because seniors are eligible to enroll in Medicare any time of year from three months before they turn 65, all throughout their birthday month, and for three months after their birthday month. That gives you seven months to track them down, teach them about various products, and close the sale. Of course, after those seven months, they can still enroll during AEP (with a late fee).
So why sell Medicare? For extra incentive, know that cold calling and door-to-door sales are not a part of Medicare sales. In fact, you would be violating codes and regulations if you did those things. This way, when you’re visiting with clients, you know that they already agreed to speak with you, and they are less likely to give you a hard time. Turning a decent profit will require you to visit with at least eight of those people per week, with the assumption that at least five of those meetings will turn into sales.
Clients who need Medicare often don’t know about all of their options.
If you haven’t been convinced to join the insurance industry yet, remember that your income potential is virtually unlimited. The compensation you receive is entirely based on you, your hours, and your ambition. If you’re willing to spend all day meeting with multiple clients and potential clients, you can make a good living. The more clients you meet with, the more policies you will sell, and the more commission you will make. It’s also a people business. If you enjoy helping people and explaining things to them in a conversational matter, this is a great position for you. To get started you’ll need to get licensed with your state department of insurance and pass a few exams and certifications, however, you usually do not need a college degree.
