Habits For Success: What Successful Agents Do Every Day

How do you define success? Is it selling thousands of Medicare plans? Is it making enough money to send your kids to college? Or, is it saving a life through providing a good health care plan? Maybe it’s all of those things combined. Do you have the habits to get you there?

I could tell you to plan your days, go to bed earlier, eat healthier, etc. but you’ve already heard all of that. Try developing these habits for success:

Don’t underestimate the power of the written word. It can inspire you, teach you, and cure your boredom all at once. Great CEOs like Mark Zuckerberg and Warren Buffet are major proponents of reading as much as you possibly can. This reading list from INC is a great place to start if you need help choosing a book.

Value downtime.

Working hard doesn’t mean working constantly. You’ll be more productive if you take small breaks throughout your days and vacation time throughout the year to relax and refresh your mind. That doesn’t mean you have to turn your mind off of business entirely, but you should take time to leave your workspace and enjoy time with family and friends. If you don’t value your down time, it’s easy to forget to value your work as well. Remember your “why.” Why are you working so hard in the first place? It’s probably not because you want to spend every day of your life working.

Stay optimistic.

Nothing hurts your motivation more than a pessimistic attitude. Tell yourself that you will make a sale, you will earn more, and you will be successful. Stay away from phrases like “I think I will” and “Maybe I’ll…” Use definitive words to encourage yourself. Instead of saying, “my goal is to sell three new plans today,” say, “I will sell three new plans today.” If it doesn’t happen, see it as an opportunity to look at where you went wrong and figure out what to do differently next time.

Take risks.

Set your goals and follow them, but don’t be afraid to venture off if life takes you in another direction. There’s no reason you can’t add more goals to your list and take your career to the next level. Don’t stand still.

Stop comparing yourself to others.

You may not measure your success in the same way as other industry members. Compare your success to the goals that you’ve set, not to the successes of others. Other people have different goals, backgrounds, and resources that may not even slightly resemble yours. Your business is your business, and you can only grow by competing with yourself.
